Dandruff is a condition wherein white flakes appear off the scalp. These are dead skin cells that are itchy to the scalp and people with this tend to scratch their head thus causing loss of hair. According to some studies dandruff does not cause balding directly. However, as you often scratched your head to relieve itching, it weakens the roots of the hair that eventually leads to hair fall.
Most people who suffer from dandruff complain irritation on their scalp. Scalp inflammation will affect the health of hair and will contribute to losing hair and thinning. In this case, they could say that dandruff is the root cause of hair loss. Can dandruff cause you to go bald? No, there are various reasons for this. Examples are changing shampoo, applying any hair products or heat based product that leads to hair loss. Some of them are due to faulty hair, lack of nutrition, hereditary illnesses, stress, anxiety and worries. Therefore, it’s not dandruff that causes hair loss. We are just not aware that in every aspect in our daily lives it contributes to hair loss or hair fall. There are some diseases also that cause dandruff like eczema and psoriasis. These make the scalp dry and lead to hair fall. Our diet and nutrition also affect hair health. Whatever we intake greatly affects our hair’s health even if we are not aware of it.
Dandruff and hair loss are interrelated. The person who has dandruff always scratched their head because it causes irritations and itching thus leading to hair loss. The roots of the hairs are weakened in that particular area. But can dandruff itself cause hair loss? No medical findings about this so we have to conclude that it is the other factors that causes hair loss instead of focusing on dandruff. Itchiness and head scratching are just some of those factors that we need to look into but it’s not the dandruff itself.
Hair Loss and Dandruff Prevention
It is important to prevent dandruff and loss of hair. In order to prevent dandruff, it is necessary to treat dandruff with proper care. But before having treatment, you must understand first the root cause of it. For example if you found out it is because of frequent changing of shampoo, then you must stick to one shampoo that suits your hair. Look for a shampoo that will help make your hair healthy and looking good. There are many brands in the market you can choose from that don’t contain harmful chemicals. In that way it will not affect the growth of your hair but rather help to maintain it. You will no longer have dandruff and won’t suffer irritation. You can also use mild conditioners to treat hair fall. Using coconut milk can decrease hair loss. There are times when you need to consult a physician to have proper treatment so you can immediately prevent dandruff and losing hair.
So, can dandruff cause loss of hair? The answer is no but certain factors cause it after having dandruff. In other words, the relationship between dandruff and losing your hair is linked, but dandruff is not a definite prerequisite to hair loss. We need to stop the root cause to totally stop it. Consulting a doctor will be a big help in proper treatment and we should also be aware of what we use daily in our hair. Just to reiterate it, dandruff doesn’t cause balding or losing your hair. We need to be properly equipped with complete knowledge on what really is causing it in order to prevent it effectively to avoid these kinds of problem in the future.
